Local Libraries & Archives

Researchers are fortunate in having a variety of libraries and archives in the Baltimore-Washington-Annapolis triangle for the study of their ancestors.

A few suggestions for effective use of libraries:

  • Since schedules, change, it is always wise to call ahead to make sure that the facility will be open on the day you plan to visit.
  • When visiting a library, determine in advance two or three problems you want to tackle. If this is your first visit to the facility, take time to discover what special collections are there that may be found nowhere else. Be sure to take pencils with you as many research centers do not permit the use of pens.
  • Remember that librarians cannot do your research for you, but they may be able to suggest sources you have not thought of.
  • When writing to a library, keep your questions simple. If you are writing to a library, and including some family history, put uour questions on a separate sheet of paper.
  • If you send material for the vertical file, you may be pleasantly surprised if other researchers see it and send you additional information.
