Citing Documents from Archives' Collections

Citations

The Maryland State Archives uses a citation system that positively identifies each document. The Archives requires such citations when issuing permission for publication of documents, maps, photographs, or web pages, in addition to a credit line of "Courtesy of the Maryland State Archives." Scholars, genealogists, and other researchers or publishers should use the following format.

        AGENCY (Series) Description, Volume, Page, Date,
        Series Number, Maryland Hall of Records (MdHR) Number

        Examples:

        Original records:

        GOVERNOR AND COUNCIL (Proceedings) An Act Concerning Religion, 1649, Liber A, ff. 268-270, MSA S 1071-4, MdHR 3821-2.

        QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY REGISTER OF WILLS (Wills, Original) Richard Tilghman, 1738, Box 12, Folder 50, MSA C 1496-19, MdHR 8877-12-50.

        SPECIAL COLLECTIONS (Huntingfield Map Collection) John Ogilby, Noua Terrae-Mariae Tabula, 1671, MSA SC 1399-187.

        From Microfilm:

Citations for the Internet

Internet sites require a special form. The Maryland State Archives recommends the following:

        Authoring organization, company, agency [or title of homepage if authoring information is unavailable].
        Exact title of the individual web page,
        Date accessed or copyrighted.
        Universal Resource Locator (URL) .

        Example:

        Maryland State Archives. Maryland Manual On-Line, "Maryland at a Glance," March 5, 1998. http://msa.maryland.gov/msa/mdmanual/01glance/html/mdglance.html.
        

Citations from the Archives of Maryland Series also require a specific form:

        Original Author, Title, Publication Location, Publication Date,
        reproduced in William Hand Browne, Edward C. Papenfuse, et. al. eds., Archives of Maryland, 215+ volumes, (Baltimore and Annapolis, Md., 1883-), Volume: Page/Pages Cited (hereinafter cited as Archives of Maryland). This series is ongoing and available on line at http://aomol.msa.maryland.gov/  where volumes, collectively or individually, can be searched electronically.

        Example:

        Thomas Bacon, Laws of Maryland At Large . . . , Annapolis: Frederick Green, 1765,
        reproduced in William Hand Browne, Edward C. Papenfuse, et. al. eds., Archives of Maryland, 215+ volumes, (Baltimore and Annapolis, Md., 1883-), 75: 18-20 (hereinafter cited as Archives of Maryland). This series is ongoing and available on line at http://aomol.msa.maryland.gov/  where volumes, collectively or individually, can be searched electronically.
