The Governor established the Maryland Commission for Celebration 2000 in June 1997 (Executive Order 01.01.1997.02). The use of 2000 in this series title and descriptions is referring to the year 2000. This Commission was created to prepare for the 21st century, it helped Marylanders better understand their past. The Commission identified and highlighted the diverse contributions and achievements of Marylanders, and celebrated their rich cultural heritage. Efforts of individuals, groups, and institutions to celebrate the contributions of Marylanders were promoted, supported, and coordinated by the Commission. While planning and executing special events, the Commission also served as a clearinghouse of information about millennium activities statewide.
