Declarations of Intention were used by would-be citizens to renounce allegiance to foreign governments and to declare the intention of becoming a United States citizen. They usually preceded other documents by at least two years, and may not have been required if a citizen had received an honorable discharge from the military or entered the country as a minor. Declarations of Intention include the following information: name, age, occupation, physical description, place of birth, where now living, spouse (if applicable), renunciation of former citizenship, place and date of arrival in USA (later records include mode of transportation).
