LAND OFFICE
(Military Lot Plats)
1787-1935
S451
Series Description
Plats of lots west of Fort Cumberland allocated to soldiers who
served in the Continental Army during the Revolution and of
tracts patented, purchased, or settled prior to 1787. In that
year Francis Deakins by appointment from the Governor and Council
surveyed those lots and tracts and prepared a large map to
portray them. In 1874 the General Assembly authorized a revision
of Deakins' map (Ch. 322) to remedy omissions and provide
additional information. The resulting product, directed by the
Land Office, numbered all military lots, showed topography, and
indicated land escheated to the state since 1787. The 1874 map
was redrawn and reformatted in 1898 and 1935. Most versions of
the military lot plats are found in Special Collections (Maps) in
series SC1427: 1787 original in SC1427-793, 1787 copies in
SC1427-773 and 900, 1874 originals in SC1427-748 and 1156, 1898
versions in SC1427-394 and 431, and 1935 versions in SC1427-392,
393, 608, and 609. The plats project will include all copies and
versions because some contain subsequent, undated annotations.
