Electronic index to the Censuses of 1776 and 1778, derived from a card index, identified as Index 46 and prepared by Patricia Ridgway, an Archives' volunteer. The Census of 1776 was taken to gain accurate population data for apportioning the costs of fighting the British, and the Census of 1778 was compiled to determine who had not subscribed to the state-mandated oath of fidelity. Entries give name, county, hundred or parish, and citation. Free blacks are separately identified.
