Series Description
Recorded sales of property other than real estate, such as crops, livestock, farm implements, furniture, wagons, and ships. Prior to the Civil War, the sale of enslaved individuals was also recorded in the chattel records. Records may include bills of sale, chattel mortgages, and releases. Information recorded typically includes names of grantor and grantee, amount of money involved, description of property, notary certification, and date of recording. Records are arranged chronologically by date of recording. Many volumes are indexed alphabetically by names of grantor and grantee.
