Often, blacks would bring to the courthouse witnesses or affidavits as proof of freedom. A sampling of such affidavits remains only for Prince George's County and dates from 1810 to 1862. The affidavits are unindexed, but contain a wealth of information including the names of the person's parents, the names of former owners, and how the person became free.
