FREDERICK COUNTY
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
(Road Descriptions)
1851-1884
C868
Series Description
Lists of public roads, created for the purpose of inventory
control and maintenance assignments given road supervisors. The
series consists of two volumes, each arranged and formatted
differently. Both contain brief descriptions of the roads and
notes about changes. The levy court began the first volume in
1841 by listing all known public roads and assigning successive
numbers to them. After that the agency added new roads as they
opened and continued with the numbering sequence. Some entries
contain cross references to county road numbers that correspond
to abstracts of county court road proceedings in (Road Book) in
series C872. These abstracts then provide references to the
recorded proceedings in (Road Record) in series C871, that
include the only records of surveys and plats.
In 1851 the levy court was abolished and the board of county
commissioners assumed its functions. The commissioners created a
new list of public roads and renumbered them with successive
numbers, regardless of location. The book was divided into
sections by election district and the roads within each area were
listed numerically. After that the agency added new roads as they
opened and continued with the numbering sequence. Many entries
contain a second number in parentheses; this refers to the number
assigned by the levy court between 1841 and 1851, that can be
used to ascertain more information as outlined above. In
addition, many entries provide references to recorded road
proceedings in (Road Record) in series C871, C874, and C2308.
The road description records are included in the plats project
because of their usefulness in identifying roads and locating the
surveys and plats. The Archives will create an electronic finding
aid from the records themselves.
