Series Information
BALTIMORE COUNTY
LEVY COURT
(Road Papers)
1825-1827
C2879
Series Description
Original papers filed in proceedings to open, alter, or close
public roads, open private roads, and construct bridges, as
handled by the board of county commissioners and its predecessor,
the levy court. Documents include petitions, objections, court
orders, commissioners returns, surveys and plats, and damage
awards to landowners. Cases are arranged chronologically by
beginning date. The Baltimore County Levy Court was given
authority to handle road petitions by Ch. 152, Acts of 1821,
previously a function of the county court. In 1827 all duties and
responsibilities of the levy court were transferred to the newly
created Baltimore County Board of County Commissioners. Both
bodies tracked road proceedings by recording brief entries in
(Road Docket) in series C412 anc C413. These books provide a
summary of activity concerning each petition, but lack case
numbers that can be keyed to the road papers. A few files were
transcribed in (Road Proceedings) in series C2878. Access
available in electronic form derived from the records themselves.
